From: bsalter@acorn.co.uk (Brian Salter) Subject: DTP News Release from Acorn Date: 9 Jan 92 16:55:51 GMT Acorn launches low cost professional DTP solution Release Date 9.1.92 Acorn Computers, in association with Computer Concepts, is launching a high powered, but low cost Desk Top Publishing system. The system is based on Acorn's A540 computer together with Computer Concepts' "Impression" software, and comes with a professional image scanner and a direct drive high resolution laser printer. The A540 has an ARM3 32-bit RISC processor running at 13.5 mips, 4MB of RAM (upgradable to 16MB), a 120MB SCSI hard disc, and is supplied with a 14" multiscan monitor. Computer Concepts' software includes the highly successful "Impression II" DTP package, which has already sold some 15,000 copies, with eight families of fonts supplied as standard. These fonts are all Adobe-compatible and around 200 font families are available for the Acorn format. Also included are "Equasor" - an equation editing program, and a set of "Business Supplement" utilities; one group allows the importation of files from packages such as WordPerfect, Microsoft Word (RTF) and Wordstar. Other utilities enable mail merging and the production of PostScript files - including colour separations - for driving image-setters. (These Postscript files can be saved to DOS formatted disks by using the MultiFS utility program supplied.) The flatbed scanner supplied with the system can scan pages up to 8.5 by 14 inches at 256 grey levels with a resolution of 300 dots per inch, whilst the laser printer can produce documents at up to 600 dots per inch at a rate of eight A4 pages per minute. The whole system sells for M-#4,995 ex VAT, which is substantially less than any other equivalent system. It will be available from a number of specialist dealers, each of whom will be able to demonstrate and support the system. Acorn's Marketing Director, Mike O'Riordan said "This system has a significant price performance advantage over any equivalent Mac or PC based system. We expect it to attract a great deal of interest, not only from small businesses who may have been put off by the thought of introducing complex DTP systems in the past, but also from those such as printers who regularly carry out DTP work on behalf of others. The Acorn-Computer Concepts' DTP solution now allows anyone to produce professional looking documents at a substantially lower cost than ever before." Charles Moir, Managing Director of Computer Concepts said "By using an Acorn 32-bit RISC workstation, along with our direct drive laser printer, we can offer a system with higher performance and twice the print resolution for half the price of an equivalent Mac system. We are very pleased to join with Acorn in marketing this system since, as a major UK computer company, this will help businesses view it as a serious alternative. The superior speed gives us significant advantages in document creation productivity and print throughput." Ends
